Body Language
Body language is an interactive mode of communication that influences us in our day to day activities. Confident and attractive body language increases the chance for a person to be successful. Our thoughts do not reflect our expressions. Body language influences what people think of you, in that case you have to be cautious as you do not want to be sending wrong signals.
Body language is used as an expression to put across out thoughts and feelings. Irrespective of body language postures which are either voluntary or involuntary projects strengths and weaknesses of our personalities. Apart from others reading our body language, we do read body languages of others likewise of them reading our body languages both consciously or unconsciously.
The judgments that we make of people are an assessment of a person at a subconscious level. Our interpretation of a person’s body language leads to form opinions of others. In cases of mistrust of a person whom you do not really know means that there’s something in the person’s body language which has raised a concern. Body language needs to natural when using voluntary gestures as a means of communication with others. Any gestures which reflect a put up effort or artificiality can send negative signals to others. Meantime a conscious effort to avoid gestures can also send negative message of your personality to the other person. However on a more positive note, a relaxed and more appropriate body language can create a positive message to other person. The most important fact is to be confident and be relaxed. If you are comfortable with yourself, others would be comfortable in your presence.
A person who portrays positive body language walks with their heads up and shoulders erect. Postures which are erect are a sign of confidence. Trust is more evident if you hold proper eye contact with a person when engaged in a conversation. When seated or walking, arms need to be relaxed at your sides and palms of your hands open. These signs can interpreted by others as approachable and trust worthy.
When meeting a person for the first time, make sure not to take an indifferent or defensive posture. If you feel comfortable and confident by standing in a particular way, make sure to take up that position as you will be more assured. If you want to look bigger take more space around you, this will make you look more confident and important to others.
The best way to make people feel comfortable around is to give a genuine warm smile. Handshakes should be firm and be careful not to shake hands too hard. This will portray confidence and sincerity. Breathing too reflects our personality; take slow deep breaths as you do not want to look anxious to the other person.
